The Rust Powers Foundation Serves Youth Through Eagle Scout Projects

The Rust Powers Foundation supports service to the community and supports the development of leadership skills in our youth. To further this aim, in 2018 the Foundation funded two Eagle Scout service projects that benefited Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Garland.

One project enlarged and renovated the playground for the church’s preschool program. The second project renovated an entire side of the church creating a prayer garden and meeting area, naming it the B. Still Garden in memory of a church member, Barbara Still. The tables in the garden are used by the preschool. The cancer bell at the front of the garden was installed in honor of the Scout’s mother who since has passed away. The pastor has seen people who are not church members walk by the church and stop to pray in the garden.

While these projects help the church and the community, they develop leadership skills in the two high school youth. Both Scouts demonstrated creativity, organization, communication, and fundraising skills to fulfill their projects. The playground renovation involved over 600 volunteer hours while the prayer garden project required over 100 volunteers contributing 2,355 total hours.

These projects support the Rust Powers Foundation’s goal to help the community, serve deserving youth, and develop future leaders; thus, improving their wellbeing.
